Marvel Rivals’ executive producer talks about Season 3, Phoenix & Switch 2

Marvel Rivals continues to roll on in its first year since officially hitting 1.0. The game has continued to build a dedicated fanbase and what better place for them to gather than San Diego Comic-Con? Even outside of the San Diego Convention Center, the streets were filled with people dressed as Luna Show, Jeff the Baby Land Shark, and a number of other breakout characters from Marvel’s hero shooter. With a bright future ahead of it, Shacknews waded through the crowds of Fantastic Four and X-Men cosplayers to find Danny Koo, Marvel Rivals’ executive producer.

Koo talked about Marvel Rivals, the game’s current story, the Season 3 arrivals, and the game’s future that may or may not include the Nintendo Switch 2.

Shacknews: Tell me about your weekend here at San Diego Comic Con. What’s the Marvel Rivals team doing here?

Danny Koo, Executive Producer: For Marvel Rivals, we have several activities. Today, Thursday, we’re going to have the voice actor panel. On Friday we’re gonna have the art team to show the concept-to-creation panel. Right here at the San Diego Ballroom at the Marriott, every day we’re going to have giveaways.

Shacknews: What can you tell me about Marvel Rivals’ story as Season 3 gets underway?

Koo: For Season 3, it’s all about Light versus Dark, the power of Phoenix versus Knull the Symbiote. Players will go through a journey of helping Phoenix to push back against the rising of Knull with the help of the new Queen in Black, Hela.

Shacknews: How has the player base reacted to Phoenix so far? What’s been the early feedback?

Koo: It’s very positive. It’s a new play style. Players that are familiar with Hela also will be feeling at ease with Phoenix. Phoenix is kind of like a long-range Duelist, so players that don’t like in-your-face kind of action can stay back and poke at players, which is great.

And this interpretation of Phoenix is different because this is Jean Grey as Phoenix. We are showing the avatar of Phoenix separately in order to better represent both sides of Jean.

Shacknews: So, Blade is next up to join the roster in just a few weeks, so what can the players expect to see from him?

Ozzie has been playing video games since picking up his first NES controller at age 5. He has been into games ever since, only briefly stepping away during his college years. But he was pulled back in after spending years in QA circles for both THQ and Activision, mostly spending time helping to push forward the Guitar Hero series at its peak. Ozzie has become a big fan of platformers, puzzle games, shooters, and RPGs, just to name a few genres, but he’s also a huge sucker for anything with a good, compelling narrative behind it. Because what are video games if you can’t enjoy a good story with a fresh Cherry Coke?
