Battlefield 6 is coming, and it’s bringing out the big guns. Here’s everything we know.

Battlefield 6 is hoping to return the franchise to its glory days by bringing back its foundational systems while evolving and innovating in meaningful ways. We already know a lot about the game, and we’ll be sharing everything we know about Battlefield 6 here.

We actually don’t know too much about the Battlefield 6 single-player campaign, though the story seems a fairly standard near-future affair. Set in 2027, you’ll play as an elite unit of Marine Raiders, Dagger 1-3, amidst a power struggle between a shaky and uncertain NATO Alliance and the rising threat of the Pax Aramada Private Military Company and their allies. There’s also a CIA operative, Agent Mills, and Murphy, an apparent member of Dagger 1-3.

The campaign looks to be filled with set pieces you’d expect from a Battlefield title, including the bombing of what looks to be the Brooklyn Bridge, massive troop deployments, and special operations. We’ll learn much more as launch draws closer.

Everything we know about Battlefield 6 multiplayer

We learned a ton about Battlefield 6 at the official multiplayer reveal, from map names, available modes, weapon and class information, open beta timing, and more. All of it looks amazing and more in line with some of the best games in the series, primarily Battlefield 3 and 4. Here’s the low-down on everything we know.

The four core Classes are back

Classes make their triumphant return in Battlefield 6. Assault, Engineer, Support, and Recon play their traditional roles with their more traditional kits. Specifically:

  • Assault uses Assault Rifles, grenade launchers, and has enhanced mobility to be the tip of the spear.
  • Engineers are SMG-wielding vehicle specialists, both in their maintenance and destruction. Equipped with an RPG and a repair tool, their purpose is to keep infantry safe from armor.
  • Support is primarily an LMG class, and the only one with heals. Their healing crate also supplies ammo, and they can build barricades.
  • Recons are your long-distance snipers who can also deploy spawn beacons and motion sensors to give their teammates a tactical advantage.

All classes can use all weapon types, but receive a special bonus for using their focused weapon type. Engineers using SMGs, for instance, get a hipfire accuracy bonus that makes them usable out to a middle distance from the hip.

Each class also comes with three gadgets that cater to their particular playstyle. Engineers get a throwable anti-vehicle grenade, and Assault can equip various grenade launcher ammo, for instance. Support gets a healing and resupply pack and a deployable shield, with Recon getting more intel-focused gadgets.

Nine maps at launch, with one classic reprisal

There will be nine maps available when Battlefield 6 launches. Eight of them are brand new, and the ninth is a remake of the Battlefield 3 map Operation Firestorm. Every map is designed for every game mode, as is Battlefield tradition, and they take place across a variety of locations and environments.

Maps are a mix of infantry and vehicle gameplay, with some being close enough quarters that even on 64-player Conquest, vehicles play little to no role. Other maps are wide open and have plenty of opportunities for the tank, helicopter, and jet pilots to shine.

No 128-player matches in Battlefield 6, either. 64 players is the maximum, which will be a load off the servers and lets the developers at DICE stay focused on more traditional map design.

Game modes that defined the series

If you were hoping for a return to form for Battlefield 6’s game modes, you’re in luck. EA and DICE have put a huge focus on the modes that made Battlefield what it is. Conquest, Breakthrough, and, most importantly, Rush are all back in hopefully the glory they deserve.

A new mode, Escalation, is making its debut, where teams fight over and expand territory while control points gradually disappear. The mode likely hopes to force the action to grow in intensity over the course of a match until everything descends into chaos when only one objective remains.

Other, faster-paced modes are coming too: Team and Squad Deathmatches, King of the Hill, and Domination. These take place on smaller, curated sections of the larger maps and feature faster respawn times and a more “instant action” feel.

Symphony of destruction

Battlefield 6 brings back environmental destruction in a big way, with many of the buildings and structures in the game fully mapped to collapse when their supports break. It looks like a massive evolution on the Bad Company 2 system, with sections of wall, ceiling, and supportive steel custom-built to fall apart.

Note that DICE is calling the system “Tactical Destruction,” which in practice means not everything can be destroyed. Specific walls and map sections won’t be much affected even when hit by high explosives.

This limitation exists to preserve the flow and balance of each map. It’s a concession Battlefield 3 also needed to make, though for technical reasons of the time. The hardware couldn’t handle nearly as much as current-gen consoles and PCs can.
Weapon customization? Oh yes

You’ve long been able to customize your weapons in a Battlefield game, but Battlefield 6 brings new depth to the system. If you’ll forgive the comparison, I see some inspiration from Call of Duty’s gunsmith system with a Battlefield flavor.

Each weapon has a number of attachment and modification slots, all of which can be swapped out to make a gun work the way you want it to. However, rather than limiting the number of attachments, each one now carries a cost.

Weapons in Battlefield 6 have a meter that fills with every attachment or modification you make, and you cannot exceed that meter’s maximum value. If you want bullets that double a weapon’s headshot multiplier, expect to need to compromise on other attachments.

A Portal to your imagination

While the Portal feature in Battlefield 2042 was a great idea with questionable execution, it had to take a distant backseat to reworking the game from the ground up.

Portal in Battlefield 6 is a far cry from its initial form, granting players the ability to craft their own maps, modes, and mode modifiers. It comes with a deep set of tools for creating custom content, whether that means creating new maps, modifying or improving current ones, and tons of additional features. DICE is keeping some of these features close to its chest.
