There’s a crossbow in Destiny 2 now, and it’s called the Opaque Hourglass. Here are the god rolls you’ll want to chase.
The Opaque Hourglass isn’t just a new weapon archetype, it’s an entirely new weapon class: the Heavy Crossbow. Available purely in the Heavy weapon slot and capable of firing massive rods of steel at your foes, if you have the god roll for this weapon, expect to be removing craniums from shoulders time and again.
Opaque Hourglass PvE god roll
The PvE god roll we’re chasing for the Opaque Hourglass is something of a catch-all. We want it to be useful in almost any situation and effective in any activity, regardless of difficulty. To that end, we’re focused on consistent damage output, ease of use, and quality of life over anything specialized.
Opaque Hourglass god roll – PvE | |
---|---|
Rail | Mag-Lev Rail (+30 Velocity, -10 Persistence) |
Bolt | Explosive Bolts (Bolts explode, dealing increased AoE damage but less impact damage) |
Perk 1 | Field Prep (Improved ammo generation. Buffs to reload, stow, and ready speeds while crouched.) |
Perk 2 | Vorpal Weapon (Increased damage to minibosses, bosses, vehicles, and Guardians in their Super) |
Origin Trait | Frame of Reference (Kills grant up to five stacks of “Frame of Reference,” increasing damage per stack. Stacks do not decay while the weapon is stowed.) |
Masterwork | Velocity (+ 10 Velocity when maxed) |
Mod | Flight (+6 Velocity, +6 Persistence) |
With these perks, the Opaque Hourglass is suitable for almost any situation. It reloads quickly, especially while crouched, the bolts reach their targets quickly, and it’s good for clearing Champions and boss DPS.

This setup is a jack-of-all-trades and a master of none. It lacks a specialty or niche function, trading a particular role for the ability to work almost anywhere. The Opaque Hourglass is also a fine Legendary option in the Heavy slot for Arc builds, or any that rely on Bolt Charge.
Opaque Hourglass PvP god roll
The Opaque Hourglass can be an absolute menace in PvP, especially if you have the aim to hit consistent headshots at a distance. The setup we’re going for seeks to maximize the weapon’s effectiveness and ease of use, so you spend less time aiming and more time slaying.
Opaque Hourglass god roll – PvP | |
---|---|
Rail | Mag-Lev Rail (+30 Velocity, -10 Persistence) |
Bolt | Charged Bolts (Attached bolts deal damage over time) |
Perk 1 | Impulse Amplifier (Massive increase to bolt velocity and an increase to reload speed) |
This PvP god roll for the Opaque Hourglass makes it a cinch to use at all but the longest ranges, ensuring your bolts hit their targets almost as quickly as a bullet. The Charged Bolts make even long-distance body shots deadlier, and Vorpal Weapon helps keep even Supers at bay.

Heavy ammo is a precious commodity in PvP, so you’ll need to be quick and accurate to get the most out of the crossbow. If you’re both, you’re unlikely to make any friends on the enemy team.
How to get Opaque Hourglass

You can only get the Opaque Hourglass as a reward from The Desert Perpetual Raid, specifically the Epoptes or final encounters. Like everything in the Raid, you’ll need to do a lot of grinding if you want higher-tier versions of the weapon, and the activity itself is punishing to a fault. I wouldn’t blame you if farming the thing was out of your scope of Destiny 2 desires.

You can also pick up additional crossbows by spending Spoils of Conquest at the final loot chest. That said, you’re better off waiting until you can get Tier 3 or better before spending your Raid currency. The Opaque Hourglass is worth it, but only really if you get one that you don’t feel like you need to dismantle the instant something better comes along.
